NAVFAC Awards Contracts for New Replacement Barracks at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina
At MCAS Cherry Point, five aging barracks buildings will be demolished and replaced with three new multistory, modern barracks buildings with more than 700 rooms. At MCB Camp Lejeune, four barracks buildings will be demolished and replaced with two new barracks buildings with more than 380 rooms. The projects also include utility upgrades and new community and service spaces like shared kitchens, laundry facilities, multipurpose rooms, 24/7 vending areas, bulk storage, and recreation shelters.
These barracks replacement projects represent an over $600 million investment to recapitalize Marine Corps infrastructure in North Carolina and advance U.S. warfighting readiness by providing Marines with modern, safe living conditions. The initiative also supports the Secretary of War's Barracks Task Force by reinforcing a culture of readiness and improving quality of life for Marines, directly impacting retention and long-term operational effectiveness.
“These projects represent a significant investment in the readiness of our Marines and the infrastructure that supports them,” said Rear Adm. Jeff Kilian, commander, NAVFAC. “When Marines live in safe, functional, high-quality facilities, they are better prepared to focus on training, recovery, and mission execution.”
This initiative was accelerated by a new congressional authority that allows the Department of Navy to replace failing unaccompanied housing by using Operations and Maintenance funding when replacement is the more effective long-term solution.
“By leveraging the new repair-by-replacement authority provided by Congress, NAVFAC can move faster to replace failing barracks with modern housing that better supports Marines and the mission,” said Rear Adm. Kilian. “Instead of taking years to execute through the traditional military construction process, this authority allows us to move forward in a matter of months. This is the kind of innovation and warfighting reform that we need to meet warfighting requirements at speed and deliver better outcomes for our Marines.”
