Trump Signals Openness to Political Shift in Iran

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump indicated on Friday that a leadership change in Iran could be beneficial, expressing his position during remarks to journalists following a trip to Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

Addressing reporters, Trump said, “Seems like that would be the best thing that could happen," when discussing the possibility of regime change in Tehran.

He criticized decades of dialogue between Washington and Tehran, stating, "For 47 years, they've been talking and talking and talking. In the meantime, we've lost a lot of lives while they talk. Legs blown off, arms blown off, faces blown off. We've been going on for a long time. So let's see what happens," he added.

The president also emphasized the expansion of American military capabilities in the Middle East, noting that significant strength had been deployed. He reiterated that "tremendous power" is now positioned in the region, as the US continues reinforcing its presence following earlier warnings of potential military action amid widespread unrest in Iran late last year.

Highlighting further reinforcements, Trump said, "Additional power, as you know, and other carriers going out shortly, so we'll see it now, if we could get it settled for once," signaling both military preparedness and a desire for resolution.

When pressed on who he would prefer to see governing Iran, Trump declined to provide specifics, responding, "I don’t want to talk about that. There are people."

He further underscored Washington’s readiness to escalate if diplomatic efforts collapse, stating that a substantial military deployment remains on standby. “Well, in case we don't make a deal, we'll need it ... If we have a deal, we could cut it short. It'll be leaving. It'll be leaving very soon. We have one out there that just arrived ... We have it ready. A big, a very big force," Trump told reporters when asked about the rationale behind dispatching a second aircraft carrier to the area.

According to reports, the US plans to deploy the USS Gerald R. Ford to the Middle East in support of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, reinforcing the existing naval presence.

While speaking in North Carolina, Trump was asked what steps Iran could take to avert potential American military action. He responded, "If they give us the right deal, we won't do that — but, you know, historically, they haven't done that. I will say they want to talk. But so far, they do a lot of talking and no action," Trump replied.
